Decarbonising ocean transportation

As customer demand for sustainable supply chains increases, A.P. Moller - Maersk accelerates the efforts to decarbonise ocean transportation by launching the world’s first container vessel, fueled by carbon neutral methanol, in mid-2023 - seven years ahead of plan. All future Maersk owned new buildings will have dual fuel technology installed, enabling them to sail on either carbon neutral methanol or very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO).

A.P. Moller - Maersk has teamed up with Hyundai Mipo Dockyards and agreed on a contract for Hyundai Mipo to build a feeder vessel with the specialised dual engine technology. The methanol propulsion configuration for the vessel will be developed by MAN Energy Solutions (main engine) in collaboration with Hyundai Mipo and Maersk. Classification society will be American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).

This groundbreaking container vessel shows that scalable solutions to properly solve shipping’s emissions challenge are available already today. From 2023 it will give us valuable experience in operating the container vessels of the future while offering a truly carbon neutral product for our many customers who look to us for help to decarbonize their supply chains,

Henriette Hallberg Thygesen
CEO of Fleet & Strategic Brands, A.P. Moller - Maersk

Our commitments on decarbonisation

2023
World's first carbon neutral liner in operation
2030
60% relative CO₂ reduction from shipping
2050
Net zero CO₂ emissions

Sailing across North Europe

The 2100 TEU container vessel will be 172 meters long and hold 400 reefer plugs, making it an ideal contribution to Sealand – A Maersk Company’s network in North Europe. More specifically the vessel will be deployed on the Baltic shipping route between the North Sea and the Bay of Bothnia, enabling us from mid-2023 to start offering customers carbon neutral ocean transport on this trade lane.

Several of our customers in Europe aspire for carbon neutral supply chains. We are thrilled and proud about pioneering the world’s first container vessel with carbon neutral fuel in our European transportation network,

Soren Castbak
Managing Director – Europe, Sealand – A Maersk Company

Many of Sealand’s and Maersk’s largest customers have set – or are in the process of setting – ambitious science-based or zero carbon targets for their supply chains, making the launch of this vessel another important step in our efforts to support the rising number of customers calling for carbon neutral ocean services.
